Rugged Kyrgyzstan, tucked away in Central Asia, is known for its vast valleys, sharp mountain peaks and countless glacial lakes. But travelers who venture further will uncover even more wonders. One of them is Skazka Canyon, also known as the “Fairytale Canyon” , a striking landscape of fiery orange and yellow rock formations shaped by centuries of wind and water. Hiking here feels like stepping into an otherworldly landscape. In this travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about visiting Skazka Canyon in Kyrgyzstan.
What is Skazka Canyon in Kyrgyzstan?
Skazka Canyon is one of the most photogenic and extraordinary landscapes of Kyrgyzstan. Through millions of years of erosion, wind and rain have formed a tangle of rock formations. Many of these natural sculptures resemble castles, towers and even dragons. Fittingly, “Skazka” means “fairy tale” in Russian, which is why the canyon is also known as the “Fairytale Canyon.”
The legend of the Skazka ‘Fairytale’ Canyon
According to a local legend, the Issyk-Kul valley was once home to several villages. In one of those villages lived a beautiful young woman. One day a huge red dragon saw her and instantly fell in love. But the young woman rejected his advances. Raging with anger, the dragon vowed to drown all the villages in the valley. Every night he tried to suck up water from the local wells with his magic. The residents managed to prevent this by covering the wells with golden lids that blocked the dragon’s magic. But one night the beautiful young woman forgot to seal her well with the golden lid. The dragon managed to suck up the water, flooding the entire valley. This is how lake Issyk-Kul is said to have been created. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the lake, the dragon laid down on the south shore and petrified there, looking out over Issyk-Kul forever.
Where is Fairytale Canyon located in Kyrgyzstan?
Skazka Canyon is located on the south side of lake Issyk-Kul 20 km from the town of Bokonbayevo and 120 km from Karkakol. If you are doing a road trip in Kyrgyzstan then the Fairytale Canyon is a great stop to make between Karakol and Bokonbayevo. From the capital Bishkek you reach the canyon in about 4.5 hours drive (230 km) and you can combine this perfectly with a day in Issyk-Kul.
How to visit Fairytale Canyon?
The road from Bokonbayevo to Karakol is mostly paved and in fairly good condition, with some occasional gravel sections. Along the way, you’ll pass a yurt camp called Royal Gate Yurt, where a sign points toward “Skazka.” From there, a rough gravel road leads 2.2 km to the canyon. The road ends at the entrance to Skazka Canyon, and you’ll need to return the same way you came.
These are the different options for visiting Skazka canyon:
- By car: renting a car in Kyrgyzstan is the best way to explore the country and reach remote places like Skazka Canyon (With the code “SNOEZEL50” you get €50 off your rental car at iDrive!)
- By local taxi: both in Bokonbayevo and Karakol, you can easily find a taxi that you can hire for the day to take you to the canyon. This is a more expensive option, but you can possibly share it with fellow travelers or combine it with other stops.
- By public transportation: this is the most inexpensive but also challenging option. The marshrutka 315 runs between Karakol and Bokonbayevo. Ask the driver to stop at Skakza Canyon and then hike another 2 km to the canyon.
The local CBT (tourism bureau) can also help you find suitable transportation and accommodations. In our travel guide Kyrgyzstan you will find all the addresses of these CBTs and so much more info!
Entrance fee Fairytale Canyon
At the beginning of the gravel road to the canyon is a toll booth with a barrier where you pay admission. The price is 50 SOM or about €0.50 per person. This fee helps maintain the canyon and you support local conservation efforts. At the canyon itself you have another stand where they sell local souvenirs such as hats and magnets. You won’t find toilets or restaurants at the entrance to the canyon itself, but you can visit Royal Gate Yurt for those.
TRAVEL TIP: Royal Gate Yurt offers a very nice lunch or dinner because this yurt camp also has a restaurant! Perfect to take a break after your visit to Fairytale Canyon or while waiting for your taxi/marshrutka.
Hiking through Skazka Canyon
Although Skazka Canyon is not huge, you can wander around here for a few hours. There are no marked trails, which means you are free to choose your own route among the rock formations. It is a paradise for those who love photography. Especially from the higher points in the canyon, you have a fantastic view, with the blue waters of Issyk-Kul Lake and the snow-capped peaks of the Tian Shan Mountains in the background.
At the entrance to the canyon, there is a large sign indicating three “hikes.” These trails take you to the main sights and most beautiful photo spots in the canyon, but you are free to go wherever you want. Be careful when climbing on the rocks, though, as some are steep with loose gravel that can cause you to slip. These are the main viewpoints in the canyon:
- “Colorfull Hills”: 200 meters walk from the parking lot (5 minutes)
- “Castle”: 500 meters walk from the parking lot (15 minutes)
- “Panorama”: 900 meters walk from the parking lot (20 minutes)
The best time of day to visit the canyon is early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight makes the colors extra warm and vibrant.

- Guesthouse Atkan (Bokonbayevo): fantastic guesthouse where we stayed near Bokonbayevo and on the shore of the lake.
